Kunstkammer (Chamber of rarities and Curiosities)

This museum is the oldest state museum designed according to the concept of Peter the Great. Being greatly interested in all kinds of curiosities, he assembled a great collection of rarities (including books, models of ships and machines, stuffed animals and unusual and exotic things such as shaman’s tambourines) first in Moscow and then in St.-Petersburg. This collection formed the initial funds of this museum which was originally conceived of a kind of a cultural centre: a combination of a collection of rarities, a library and an observatory. In order to attract people to the museum Peter ordered to offer free tea, coffee or vodka to the visitors at the entrance, but even this bold measure did not produce long queues: people did not really care about the enlightment but first of all they were simply scared off by such exhibits as deformed foetuses kept in alcohol. However, as reforms proceeded and the amount of educated people has grown, the museum started attracting visitors with its growing collections (the expeditions sent by the Academy of Sciences were bringing a lot of new exhibits every year). Later zoological, botanical and mineralogical museums branched off. Currently the unique collections of the museum trace the evolution of human civilization and contain close to a million exhibits of cultural anthropology from all over the world. No alcohol is offered at the entrance any longer though!
