Oline:
"From my mid twenties to my mid thirties I was so absorbed by my own artistic ambitions of becoming a professional classical singer that I hardly ever thought about having children. And when I did, it seemed like something that would just eventually happen. The first time I really realized I wanted a child, I was in my late thirties, and as I had by then changed paths and was doing another university degree, time just passed by and I only started trying to get pregnant with my ex partner in my early forties.
In my generation we were taught to be careful not getting pregnant by accident, and to protect ourselves from AIDS but no one really educated us on declining fertility. As I saw a lot of people having children in their early forties, I just assumed we would also succeed with a natural pregnancy in maybe a year or two, if we were just patent.
So when I got pregnant naturally at the age of 43 I already started imagining little feed running around the apartment and my life as a mother. This changed when I went for a scan at week six and there was only a placenta growing but no fetus. My gynecologist told me it was very improbable I would have a child, and eventually I miscarried at week ten. Only three months later I was pregnant again, and was sure this would be my lucky one as I figured no-one could be so unfortunate to have two miscarriages in three months. I miscarried three days before Christmas Eve.
Despite continuously trying, nothing happened at 44. I started getting a bit worried and had bloodwork done just before turning 45. The result was low AMH, and the conclusion that it was very improbable that IVF with my own eggs would work. I did though do one IVF with own eggs at a fertility clinic in Denmark as we had never tried IVF, and the clinic recommended us to try at least once. Six eggs grew, three bigger ones, and I started dreaming again. But the clinic was closed on Sunday, and when I arrived Monday morning I had unfortunately already ovulated so no eggs could be harvested. I was devastated.
I only had another ten months to do fertility treatment in Denmark because of the age limit of 46, so together with my ex partner we decided to try with an egg donor. At that point it was clear to me that I wanted a child and that my chance of getting one was through egg donation. Back then I wanted a Danish donor so being treated in a Danish clinic made sense to me. Of course I had to adjust to the thought of egg donation but I felt so much in a hurry that I had hardly time to think about it, and was only focused on finally having my child.
We got four blastocysts from our donor eggs, and I was convinced we would get maybe even two children. I got pregnant at the third egg transfer, and was again convinced this would be it. I had several heavy bleedings at week six though, and thought I had miscarried. But when I went for a scan to my big surprise there was a heartbeat. So I asked the clinic again if there was anything I could do to optimize my chances of keeping the baby but was told, just to continue with my normal life and same medication and let nature do its course. I continued bleeding but when I had a scan at week eight there was still heartbeat and the clinic gave me my due date. I was over the moon. Unfortunately when I went for my next scan at week ten the fetus had died. Again a missed abortion. I did my fourth transfer in a rush because of the age limit of 46 in Danmark but was not successful.
In April 2021 my ex partner and I split up and I moved back to Denmark from abroad. In the meantime I had read about OLGA clinic and had decided I would try to get a child on my own. I had my first contact with OLGA in April 2021 when I was 46 years old but was still a bit undecided because I wanted open donation, which was not possible back then, and I also still hoped to find a partner who would want to be the father of my child.
From the summer of 2021 to the summer of 2023 I was in a new relationship. My partner had two younger children, and I really got to experience what it means to live in a family context with children. And I loved it. I had told him from the beginning I wanted to try for a child and we had decided to wait until the spring of 2023 so we could test our relationship until then. At the end it turned out he actually was not ready for more children, so in September 2023 we split up and a few days later OLGA had a seminar in Copenhagen which I went to on my own. I was by then 48.
I had a first talk with Dr. Olga at the seminar, and another one later that fall. By October I had decided for a money back guarantee package with double donation in Cyprus. Because of my age it was clear to me, on a rational level, that egg donation was my only chance but sometimes I was still thinking, maybe if I try with my own eggs a miracle will happen and I will get pregnant... What was strongest though was my determination to finally have a child and get on with my life after almost ten years during which all my major choices in life were made based on my one life goal, to become a mother.
In December 2023 I had hysteroscopy with now major issues. In the meantime I had started choosing my donors
For the egg donor I got access to the OLGA egg donor database. For me a certain physical similarity with me was important, and I wanted an open donor. At the beginning I was also looking for a certain level of education (university degree) but realized this would exclude too many candidates so I settled for a college degree.
Especially because of my hight the number of possible candidates was not very high but I ended up with three possible candidates who had some physical similarities with me. I then read through all the information about them gathered in the data base and also had a friend who knows Russian read through their hand written letters, as good knowledge of one's own language is important to me. I also tried to understand the personality of the donor based on her answers to all the various questions, and looked at the physical and educational information about her family. I eventually found a donor who seems to have a strong and positive personality and some similarity to me. It was not an easy process but at the same time very exciting and it felt like a relief when I finally decided on a donor.
With the sperm donor I chose Cryos because I wanted a Danish donor and followed a similar process.
I turned out not to be the easiest patient so we needed three transfers before I got pregnant. At the third transfer some extra medication which had shown effectiveness in smaller experimental trials was added and finally in July 2025 I got pregnant and had my beautiful baby boy in March 2026 at 50 years of age.
Of course I wish I was younger, so we would have the prospect of spending more years together, but this was the option I was given, and I am so grateful he is finally here and absolutely love our life together."
