The reproductive system is a subtle mechanism implementing a set of repeating physiological changes, i.e. a menstrual cycle. Regular menstrual cycle is vital for&nbsp;the woman&rsquo;s ability to conceive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fig\">Fig. 1. Female reproductive organs.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Uterus<\/li>\n<li>Fallopian Tube<\/li>\n<li>Uterus Cervix<\/li>\n<li>External Orifice of Uterus<\/li>\n<li>Ovary<\/li>\n<li>Vagina<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The primary process of menstrual cycle is maturation of an eg (oocyte) which&nbsp;can be fertilized. At&nbsp;the same time the inner uterus layer (<a href=\"\/en\/terminology\/#20\" title=\"endometrium\">endometrium<\/a>) is getting prepared for&nbsp;reception of the fertilized oocyte (<a href=\"\/en\/terminology\/#36\" title=\"implantation\">implantation<\/a>). The flow of this process is regulated by hormones.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In&nbsp;the beginning of menstrual cycle the glands located in&nbsp;female brain discharge into blood the hormones which&nbsp;stimulate the oocyte maturation in&nbsp;the <a href=\"\/en\/terminology\/#50\" title=\"ovary\">ovary<\/a>&gt; and&nbsp;<a href=\"\/en\/terminology\/#48\" title=\"ovary\">ovulation<\/a>. These hormones are usually called after&nbsp;their functions, their names coming from Latin or&nbsp;Greek and&nbsp;usually used in&nbsp;abbreviated form.<\/p>\n<h2>The menstrual cycle is controlled by hormones produced in&nbsp;the brain.<\/h2>\n<p>Gonadotrophin releasing hormone (<a href=\"\/en\/terminology\/#30\" title=\"GRH\">GRH<\/a>) plays a key role in&nbsp;hormone regulation of the menstrual cycle. It stimulates the discharge of <a href=\"\/en\/terminology\/#27\" title=\"follicle stimulating hormone\">follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)<\/a> and&nbsp;<a href=\"\/en\/terminology\/#41\" title=\"luteinizing hormone (LH)\">luteinizing hormone (LH)<\/a> by the brain area, called <a href=\"\/en\/terminology\/#35\" title=\"hypophysis\">hypophysis<\/a>. Both hormones influence the ovaries via blood.
