Legislation.

Legislation in Russia on donating eggs

Some countries don’t allow women to donate eggs. Russia is one of the most tolerant countries in Europe when it comes to laws regulating the circumstances in which it’s possible to donate eggs. Donor anonymity is not forbidden, and donors are allowed to be compensated by clinics. This means that it is possible for O.L.G.A. Fertility Clinic to uphold a database of egg donors who are available to offer their help to childless couples and single women.

The rules on donated eggs

Russia is among the minority of European countries with no substantial restrictions in laws on donating eggs. It allows anonymous egg donation given that the donor is aged 20-35 and has at least a single healthy child of her own. Donation by a donor that the recipient knows is also allowed, for example when the donor is a female relative or acquaintance.

There are of course directions that all Russian reproductive medicine clinics such as O.L.G.A. Fertility Clinic must follow. Such as, the private data of donors and recipients must be held securely, and are referred as a subject to medical secrecy. The medical secrecy rules also mean that identifying information about a patient (address, phone number, photos, etc…) may not be revealed to an anonymous donor, or vice-versa. We treat the regulations concerning anonymity with all the respect necessary. Furthermore, no information about the fact that a child was conceived via egg donation will be passed by O.L.G.A. Fertility Clinic to the child. We find it the best way to protect parents, the donor and the offspring. It is fully your decision what you plan to tell your child.

However, egg recipients surely have the right to be acquainted with some information about the person who donates eggs. This consists of some of the donor’s relevant medical data, a description of her appearance, and her nationality. To keep the donor’s anonymity, no photo is given to the patients. Doctors at O.L.G.A. Fertility Clinic can have some photographs of donors, in order to compare these to the photograph/s of the egg recipient with the purpose of making a good match. We also meet all our donors personally, and give the opportunity for the recipients to meet us individually previous to making a match.

Under Russian law, married Russian couples who have given informed consent to fertility treatment procedures are considered as parents of an offspring born as the result of that treatment. This applies to the children born as a result of fertility treatment, using donated eggs. In a majority of European countries, the woman who gives birth to a child becomes his or her legal mother.

Many clinics throughout Europe have rules that restrict the age limits for egg recipients. Some clinics may even refuse to treat women older than 40. At O.L.G.A. Fertility Clinic, we can treat egg recipients up to the age of 50.

Overcoming the shortage of donated eggs

Some countries have performed several attempts to reduce the lack of egg donors by instituting ‘egg sharing’ programmes. This implies that the donated eggs collected from one woman during IVF treatment are transferred to more than one recipient. This woman may be an egg donor, or she may be a patient herself. In the second case, she has to allow donating some of her eggs, usually in return for free or discounted treatment. Her own chances of successful IVF treatment may be considerably reduced as a result of giving away some of her eggs. This is not possible in Russia as IVF patients are not allowed to be egg donors.

At O.L.G.A. Fertility Clinic, we do not practice ‘egg sharing’ with egg donors either. Each egg donor is individually matched to one egg recipient, who receives all the eggs (collected in a single stimulation cycle) from that donor. This increases the chances of success.

Interested in egg donation at O.L.G.A.
