Our thoughts on St. Petersburg
My husband and I had made the decision to have our IVF treatment at O.L.G.A. Fertility Clinic based in St Petersburg after a failed attempt at a clinic in the UK. St Petersburg was always a city that we had wanted to visit but we had heard mixed reviews of what it was like for tourists and so we were slightly apprehensive as we landed at the airport on our first visit in September 2014.
As we came through customs and were met by our driver we were pleasantly surprised at how friendly people were. Our driver was truly fantastic, talking to us as he took us to our hotel about the city and suggesting lots of things to do and places that we should visit. He also gave us loads of really interesting details about what it was like to live in St Petersburg and about the history of the city.
On the drive to our hotel we were very impressed by the size and grandeur of some of the really beautiful buildings, the cleanliness of the city and the feeling of being immersed in the history of St Petersburg.
We arrived at our hotel, the Astoria, and once more were impressed by the friendly and helpful greeting that we received from the hotel staff. They checked us in and offered us assistance in helping make our stay as enjoyable as possible by recommending restaurants and things that we might like to do during our time here. The hotel itself was beautiful and we were delighted with our choice. The staff continued to offer assistance throughout our stay and nothing was too much trouble for them. We were always greeted with smiles and a friendly attitude by them in all parts of the hotel.
During our stay in St Petersburg we spent a lot of time walking around the city. Before we arrived we had been concerned about safety in the city but once we were there we relaxed completely. We felt totally safe as we walked around exploring the cities amazing museums, churches, shops and restaurants. We visited the spectacular Hermitage and Faberge museums and could have spent days just looking at the wonderful exhibits and rooms, indeed we have been back several times since our first visit!
We also managed to get to see the Nutcracker ballet at the small theatre at the Hermitage and on another visit saw an opera at the famous Mariinsky theatre. Both were brilliant and it was lovely to see so many families with children attending the performances.
What struck us was that wherever we visited people were so friendly and helpful and wanted to make sure that we enjoyed our time in this beautiful city.
Another wonderful surprise was the fabulous food and choice of restaurants that StPetersburg has to offer. My husband and I enjoy eating out and trying new restaurants and StPetersburg has a fabulous selection of restaurants to try. We had such lovely food and didn’t have one bad meal in the entire time that we were there. There are some lovely little cafes serving wonderful teas, coffees and cakes as well as restaurants offering fabulous lunches and dinners. The staff at our hotel were happy to make recommendations for us and book tables for us.
Both my husband and I fell in love with the city and have been back a few times since our first visit. Each time we go we see something new and love getting to know the city better with each trip we make. It is somewhere that we will continue to visit over the years and will greatly enjoy introducing our children to St Petersburg. We cannot recommend the city enough, it is full of wonderful surprises and experiences and such warm and caring people.
